Star Trek
Wow. Went to the new Star Trek movie this pm. It is absolutely wonderful. Yeah, it isn't canon. But the new backstory is better than the original, the actors are cute as buttons and very well-cast, and the movie is just awesome. I came away feeling that it's really what the original should have been (and I am a TOS fan). They kept everything essential, including the relationships and the personalities, and they turned it into something way more powerful than it ever was before. Pwned! I want to go back to see it again in the theatre, something I just don't do anymore. But it's worth that. It's very, very good.

Well I wanted to see it before, but after your review I realize I will have to (hafta LOL) see it in the theater. Will need to find babysitter and good night to go to the theater.

I am now caught up on all your posts...even though we spoke tonight. I hope you had a wonderful and quiet Mother's Day. I miss and love you so very much. I can't wait to someday (hopefully relatively soon) see your new farmette. Plus you need to actually meet your Grandson in person ...though he is such a boy.

Melacha (your loving daughter....just in case you forgot )

there was supposed to be a grin after the "just in case you forgot", but I guess it didn't post. Also that was meant to be at my expense not yours....I am the less than dutiful daughter who doesn't write or call as often as she should. I love you!!!

It's because you used the pointy brackets, which are used in HTML, and this page displays in HTML. When the browser sees the brackets and doesn't understand the word(s) inside, it just throws away the whole thing. On HTML pages you have to wrap your grins in square brackets or asterisks. Or turn them into smiles. :-)

Wow. That was a lot of reading. You must email me your email address: I think I lost it some time ago, and didn't bother to ask for it because you never read your email anyway, but it sounds like now maybe you do. I'm less bad at keeping in touch through email than through any other mode of communication, though that doesn't mean I'm exactly good at it....

My nephews are boys too, and I manage to love them, so I may be able to find some fondness for my younger grandson. It's not completely beyond possibility.

I would email you my email address, but I think I have forgotten yours. I will have to see if I can remember it. I do much better with email now as I tend to spend a lot of time checking it to see if there are any party leads or any other info I need.

Mine's been the same since about 1995: melisa AT sff.net

But I see by my incoming email that you know that already.

okay...rolling on floor laughing, but what is the MAO

Why are you laughing...bother, did I use the word incorrectly?

...my asterisk off. And no, you didn't use it incorrectly at all. I just roflmao (pronounced to rhyme with awful-now) sometimes when people have epiphanies. I don't know why. I think it's the word that amuses me. Sorry.

No need to be sorry. At least I used it correctly ; )

and hey now I know what ROFLMAO is and I've wanted to know for awhile. So there we are.

Now I have to go though, cause my big girl needs to be picked up from school. Talk later.

So glad you enjoyed Star Trek! I'm looking forward to seeing the movie, and it sounds like Al wants to see it, too. All the feedback so far has been quite positive. Hope that it's still playing here in town when we get a free weekend.

Unless you're really rabid ST-canon fans, I think you'll love the new Trek. I hope you do get a chance to see it in the theatre.

I always had problems with how Shatner played Kirk in the TV series, and I'm definitely not into ST canon. And, yes, it's never the same with DVD on the computer. The local SF club went as a group on Friday night.

LOL, yeah, Shatner was...not Kirk. The new kid is.

Most movies I'm just as glad to wait for the DVD if I see them at all, but I'm so glad I went to the theatre for this one.

I saw it, too. I'm a Trekie from way back, but I liked it too!

I'm a Trekkie from so far back, I don't consider TNG or any of the other spinoffs real Trek. But although I attended them avidly, I was deeply unimpressed with ALL the earlier TOS-cast movies. (Actually I don't think I bothered to see one of them, maybe IV.) I was thrilled at the time, when the first one or two came out, but ultimately, they were just booooooring.

The new interpretation didn't bore me. And I happen to like the rosy Federation world where we ended up. I even like that although Spock is smarter, faster, stronger...Kirk the hot-head is the soul of the outfit and as such belongs on the throne, with Spock the power behind him. I like that dynamic. I don't feel it's demeaning to Spock -- More like demeaning to Kirk, really -- But I can understand why some people would disagree rather strongly.

And alas, I've never been one to particularly notice whether there are any powerful women around. I mean, if there are, I do see them. (I especially see when they're referred to as shrill because they're powerful.) But from childhood I've always tended, if women are absent from my fiction, not even to notice because I'm too busy identifying with the men.

(Incidentally, tho, I'm shocked at some of the sexist crap I didn't notice in early SF/F because I was busy identifying with the adventurous men instead of with their whiny cook-and-bottlewashers. But that's another story.)

We probably will not see it in the theater, but I do want to see it eventually. I'm the sort who catches up on a movie a couple years after it is released, with a few exceptions. Most of what I've read has been mainly positive. Glad you enjoyed it.

Yeah, that's the way I relate to movies, too. My honey always has a list of exciting new films he wants to see, and when there's an option I tend to send him off to see them by himself. Sometimes they sound interesting, so I think I'll see them on DVD, but then I usually don't get around to it.

I'm very glad I went to this one, though.

Hi, Tom. Nice to see you here! We actually went to ST again yesterday, and it was just about as good the second time around. The science is still silly, but hey, so was the Skyrider's when the plot called for it.
