Not a Litter Box
Our elder cat Pilikia occasionally uses something other than a litter box as a litter box. This seems to have nothing to do with the cleanliness of existing litter boxes, or with anything else that I can identify. She has used printers, kitty beds, throw rugs, empty boxes, and most recently, my unwashable zabuton-substitute cushion. Which I guess will teach me not to leave my meditation cushions out when I'm not meditating. [sigh] I'll have to try to make a zabuton. (They're much too expensive to buy.) But not till after we move, I think. I can make do with temporary ankle-protectors (a folded towel, maybe) till then.

What I don't understand is why Pilikia does this. She's not even choosing things that are in any way similar to either litter boxes or the sort of place a cat usually chooses who is allowed outdoors. I don't believe she ever did it before she was ten or so, and I cannot find any contributing factor. Unless it's a very odd protest of the existence of our other cat, the ubiquitous Lulu who is her arch-enemy; but as she did try to ruin a printer in this way before Lu came to live with us, I don't think it's that. She's not ill, and although she is remarkably stupid for a cat, she's not a drooling idiot: she knows what and where the litter box is.

Oh, well. There's nothing to be done about it that I can see, except discourage her from the furniture and hope for the best. Who knows what's going on in her tiny mind? I certainly don't.

I have a friend who is having luck with Feliway.

Here's a company press release

Oh, yes, I've read of this and it's said to be quite good. Unfortunately the problem with Pilikia isn't urine-marking. It's not just urine. It really seems as though she mistakes other things for a litter box, or prefers them to a litter box. Her little pet bed, frex, was in a place where I didn't notice the odor right away, and tracked it down because I wasn't finding any lumps of either sort in her litter box.

Lu did urine-marking at one point, or what I thought was urine-marking, which is when I looked into this Feliway product; but before I tried any I realized the problem was a urinary tract infection. As soon as she'd been to the vet and medication had made her more comfortable, she returned happily to the litter box, so I never had occasion to try the Feliway.

Our one cat has a similar issue, and we're thinking it's because she's gotten old and lazy, and decided that wherever is good enough if the litter box isn't nearby.

Yeah, it may be sheer laziness. I am Not Pleased, but what can you do?

If I knew, I'd have done it! So, yeah, I don't know, what can you?

Hrm...diaper the kitty butt!

Barni, my beloved older spayed female, started doing that late in life. I found a spot she particularly liked and moved the litter box to that location. She moved over a few inches and used the spot beside the litter pan. I took her to the vet for a checkup and she was fine, just old. So -- sorry. Love your cat; hate her actions. Sigh.

Alas, we are all getting old and perhaps developing an awkward trait or two. (Though I hope it will be a while yet before I decide to pee on the furniture.)

Printers? Eek!

. . . we've got another puppy that eats electrical cords. Also she sat on my laptop, last night, and has sprung one of the hinges. ::sigh::

Sympathies!

Lu has a mild case of pica, so we have to keep watch over non-food items that she might eat. Her fave is styrofoam, but she also likes rubber bands and odd bits of other plastics.

Sympathy on the laptop hinge. Puppies are so enthusiastic.

Indeed she is. But then, she always has done. Not always intentionally. There's a reason we often refer to her as "the blonde."

Are the litter boxes covered? Or open? Perhaps uncovering one (or covering if they are open) may make a difference. When we had the Persian, as he older, the covered boxes were less favorable to him. Sometimes just a change of "scenery" can make a difference.

That's an idea. Both litter boxes are open; I'll try covering one. It just might suit.

...I have a cat now! [Actually it might be closer to "the cat has me"]
When it rolls on its back when you pet it &pats your arm withits feet[Claws!Ahh!]while trying to eat your wrist- is it being friendly or mad at me?
On the other hand its finally figured out that it has to eat all its food in the daytime or the racoons will come at night. [Racoons are disconcertingly big!! and not scared of me]

Have not yet discovered where Squitty [Squeeky-Cat, very imaginative name, I know] does cat-buiness, but as it outside cat this is okay, yes? *curious*

Cool that your cat found you! And of course it doesn't matter where it does its business. Outdoor cats often do it far from home. (Yeah, raccoons are big and not scared of you. They're very bossy and are a real danger to kitties.)

When it rolls on its back and tries to eat your wrist it's likely being friendly, but the claws and biting should be discouraged. You just disengage when it does that, and quit entirely if it won't stop; if it wants petting, it'll learn not to.

...will the racoons eat the cat? I've noticed it takes off during the night unless we're out there [& then huddles by our feet when we hunt the wily racoon wth the cameras]
what about possums? are they a threat to the cat too? [The ones here seem to be of a good size, but that might be normal for the species, theyre as new to me as racoons & pet cats are]

I think it's figured it out now not to gnaw; it turns into a cat-shapped fuzzy slipper instead, & lolls on our feet. which is amusing if slightly irksome, it has a decided fondness for napping in the sawdust-mulch stuff of the rosegarden. [cats must have some sort of "shameless" gene to make up for their lack of thumbs. :D]

Pilikia is a pretty name, what does it mean?

Raccoons likely won't attack the cat if it doesn't attack them; but in a fight, the raccoon would win. Opossums are much the same; very willing to duck a fight unless they get cornered, but they're pretty well able to finish what someone else starts if they have to. (Incidentally, their knack of "playing dead" is actually a tendency to faint when startled.)

Pilikia (pronounced pee lee KEE ah) means small trouble or nuisance, even annoyance. It's a lame joke: when Lu goes looking for trouble, what she hopes to find is Pilikia....
