Lutheran/Lefse
I was googling for Lutheran/lefse history, wondering whether Lutherans were usually of Norse/Icelandic descent or what, and I found this song lyric. Alas, it may amuse only those familiar with ND, I don't know, but I found it delightful.

The song's a hoot!

I believe that Luther was German and more Lutherans would be German than Norse. Just a speculation... And I was given to understand that the Lefse Factory (located in the town where we grew up) used my grandmother's recipe. That would be Mary Murphy.

Yeah, Luther was German, and it makes sense that therefore more Lutherans would be German than Norse, but I'm not sure it's true in the US. Don't know, though.

Too cool about your grandmother's recipe. Does the Lefse Factory still exist?

It was called Carl's Lefse Factory, and no, I don't think it is there anymore.

Not sure how many Norwegians in Norway are Lutherans, though.

It may be an immigrant thing. What about Iceland? I know nothing about Iceland, but a lot of the settlers around the Upham area were Icelandic, and it's still reflected in their names and culture. I think the Norsk in discussions of Lutherans are as often Icelandic as Norwegian. Hm, but the Hostfest page talks about Vikings, and I think those were from Norway....

I think I am ignorant. (Duh!)

There's a lot of confusion about "vikings" generally. I'd connected the term with the Danes, but this page has some interesting comments: http://eeliag.netwiz.net/etm.html

Heh. That's relevant to northern Minnesota, too. Lots of Germans and Norwegians and Finns. "Uff-da" heh! So Minnesotan.

Makes sense. I think of it as "so North Dakotan," but ND and MN have a lot in common. Heck, Fargo was filmed in MN.

Mmm. I hope they kept it when they moved- it was hilarious.

Books like that are such an endearing glimpse into a culture. Somewhere online there's a "you might be North Dakotan if..." page that tells more about ND culture than the average informational site does.
