Leveling Skills in WoW
My main on the Alliance side is a herbalist-alchemist, with her skills maxed at 300, but no problem: although she's not quite old enough for the Outlands (where she can upgrade her skills), there's no real rush about it. She can pick all the herbs she can find, and execute all the recipes she has been able to buy, and that's what matters.

My main on the Horde side is a skinner-miner with his skills maxed at 300. He can mine everything he can find, but skinning is becoming a problem: he's already killing mobs that present difficulty skinning, with repeated failures. I hadn't intended to take him to the Outlands till he was 60, because it seems scary and I'm just in no hurry: there's plenty to do where we are. But ouch. Why is this happening? I don't understand. In the Olden Days, before BC, 300 was the max anybody could get at any skill. Did characters at level 60 have to leave lvl-60 mobs lying around unskinned, or what?

I don't WANT to go to the Outlands early. But my horde main is a hunter. He routinely kills things three and four levels higher than he. At this rate he'll be unable to skin his kills long before he's 58, which as I understand it is theoretically the youngest it's reasonable to go to the Outlands. [sigh] I hate leaving things unskinned.

Going to Outlands "early"

Just get someone to Port you into Shattrath, make it your Hearth and then you can portal for free back into Horde and Alliance main cities. Alliance - Stormwind Darnassus Ironforge and Exodar... I'm not certain of the main Horde cities but Undercity Ogremar (sp?)Thunderbluff and the Blood-Elf capital would be reasonable spots. Shattrath is neutral and it has a few flight points already attached to its FP...

Well, yeah. But I'm a solo player. I don't KNOW anyone, and I'm irked enough (on my Alliance main) by strangers asking whether I'll summon them (she's a warlock) that I'm not eager to do the same thing to a mage. I s'pose I could advertise for it on the trade channel; that would be less intrusive. Dunno what would be a reasonable payment to offer, though.

But the really puzzling thing is why this is happening. My Horde main's first difficult-to-skin kill was only level 56. How can that be? That would almost guarantee that by 60 they're unskinnable, and that doesn't make sense unless it's been changed since BC. (Which I suppose maybe it has, to encourage people to buy BC. Pfui.)

Oh, and the Horde main cities are Orgrimmar, Undercity, Silvermoon City, and Thunder Bluff. I guess you don't play any Horde, eh?

I have a Hordey on another server than my Main... but she's about level 20 and I've not played as her in months. I found Ungoro Crater to be good for my skinning. My char just turned 50, I play solo mostly as well, and she's 316 in Skinning. I would ask on the trade channel and offer maybe 3g just to have the option to hearth-port out of Shattrath and hit up the Trainers. Often folks are selling ports on Trade as I'm sure you've heard. I love your 'powrz" icon!

If she's 316 in skinning, she must have been to Shatt already, eh? My guy maxed at 300 back in his thirties or forties, but quite enjoys Un'goro for the skinning anyway. Though it's the pits for Horde to go to that fp. You have to wait till there's a clear space in the pesky little plants, which are Alliance. When I first went there on my Alliance main I wondered why all the Horde folks were lurking down near the exit. Now I see it's the only place they can sit down without being assaulted.

Thanks for the advice. I'll watch the trade channel. Ours is a medium-pop server (recently low) and I haven't seen such advertising yet, but there must be mages who'd be willing for a few gold.

Though I was talking with my honey just now, and he thinks my Ffred will still be able to skin mobs right up to level sixty, they'll just involve repeated failures till we get the skill upgrade. So I guess the Outlands might not be essential yet after all. Cool with me. :)

Went to Outlands

Well, it was a Friday night and folks were hanging out in Org, so I said wtb port to shatt 3g and pretty soon a mage responded and ported me. Whew, that's a very strange city, full of very odd things. Not sure I won't decide it was premature, but I did make it my hearth before I ported back. Also checked in with the flight master, who said (surprise!) I didn't know any fps connected with his. I really didn't want to go anywhere, just wondered.

The thing was that I was ending up standing in the middle of mobs trying and trying to skin one before another attacked me, and it was getting a little hairy sometimes. Decided it would be worth the trouble to get that upgraded. But I still don't plan to actually do anything in the Outlands for another two or three levels yet. (Man, did I feel like a n00b trying to find my way around in Shattrath!)

Oh, and they don't seem to have a port to Silvermoon City, just Org and TB and Undercity. (That's okay, only jewelcrafters ever go to SC anyway, and they don't hang around once they've got their profession upgrade.)
